stephengatelyfans.co.uk // keeping Stephen's memory and spirit alive

Welcome...

...to Stephen Gately Fans, my website dedicated to the late singer and actor Stephen Gately, whose short but brilliant life suddenly ended on 10th October 2009 when he passed away from an undiagnosed heart condition.
He was the most kind, gentle, talented and beautiful person, and the world is now a much darker place without him in it. But his memory and spirit will live on in everyone whose lives he ever touched. By keeping this website open as a long lasting tribute to him, I hope to ensure that his legacy lives on and that we never ever forget him.
R.I.P Stephen, 17/3/76 ~ 10/10/09

     NEW MEMORIAL CAMPAIGN
Posted on 24 Mar 2010 by Laura
Dublin City Council is currently considering a proposal to rename a train station after Stephen.

Independent councillor Christy Burke is wanting to rename the Docklands stop in Dublin 1 in honour of Stephen, who grew up in the area. Speaking to the Herald, he said: "I put a motion in this morning for the April meeting that the central area committee agrees that we call it after Stephen. It would be appropriate as he came from the area. Boyzone have already said they would pay for a statue (of Stephen). If it gets through the area committee in April it will go before the May city council meeting. He was an ambassador for Dublin and particularly for Sheriff Street. His family are a rock in that community."

     IRELAND'S GREATEST EVER PERSON
Posted on 22 Mar 2010 by Laura
RTE Television is currently running a poll to find Ireland's greatest ever person. A survey of the Irish public was conducted and the top 40 names from that survey have now been put forward for the poll. The great news is that Stephen is one of the name's longlisted! smile

You can vote for him by clicking here. You have until noon on 2nd April to cast your vote and the top 5 with the most votes will then make up the final shortlist. Each of the top 5 will then feature in their own hour long documentary, before the winner is finally announced on The Late Late Show in October.

So get voting for Stephen, it would be fantastic to see him make the top 5 at least! Don't forget to spread the word on twitter and facebook etc as well! smile
     TRIBUTE AND DOCUMENTARY
Posted on 22 Mar 2010 by Laura
It was StephenSunday yesterday as the Tribute To Stephen and Life After Stephen programme's aired. Both were lovely but very heartbreaking to watch as well.

Both shows seemed to get a good reaction from people posting on twitter and, at one stage last night, Stephen and Boyzone even had five of the trending topics in the UK and one of the trending topics worldwide! smile

It's also been confirmed today that the tribute show was watched by 7.5 million viewers, making it the second highest rated terrestrial programme of the evening - fantastic news that so many people will have gained more of an insight to the Stephen we all knew and loved smile

Gave It All Away is also heading back up the iTunes chart as a direct result of the show - and many other Boyzone songs also feature inside the iTunes top 1000!

You can download both shows from the tributes section.

     FORTHCOMING TV SCREENINGS
Posted on 12 Mar 2010 by Laura
There are a couple of Stephen-related bits and pieces being screened on TV this month.

Firstly, Stephen's interview with Olivia Newton-John, which he recorded shortly before his death in October, is finally being shown on Film24. You can catch it on Sky channel 157 at 9.55pm on Wednesday 17th March.

And, secondly, the Boyzone tribute show, which was recorded last week, is being screened on Sunday 21st March. About the show, the Radio Times writes: "Boyzone are joined by some very special guests to celebrate the life of their friend and band-mate Stephen Gately in a very special evening. They are joined by an array of stars including Mika, Girl's Aloud, Nadine Coyle, Paul O'Grady, Bertie Ahen, Bono, Robbie Williams and Sharon Osbourne. There are also interviews with Stephen's husband Andrew Cowles and his sister Michelle Carr. The show is set to the soundtrack of his life, Boyzone's greatest hits climaxing with the band uniting with fellow countrymen Westlife on stage for the first time ever."

You can catch 'Boyzone: A Tribute To Stephen Gately' on Sunday 21st March on ITV1 from 8.30pm-9.30pm.

This will then be followed by a documentary following the Boyz as they adjust to life without Stephen. According to the Radio Times, it's "an intimate and sensitive portrait of the four remaining members of Boyzone as they struggle to deal with losing their friend and bandmate Stephen Gately, who passed away suddenly in 2009 at the age of 33. Ronan Keating, Mikey Graham, Keith Duffy and Shane Lynch open up about how they are coping with the tragic loss of their 'brother' Stephen. Moving from the day of Stephen's star-studded memorial to the band's first performance with only four members, the programme gives viewers unprecedented access to Boyzone's journey as they look ahead to an uncertain future.

You can watch this documentary on Sunday 21st March on ITV2 from 10.00pm-11.00pm.
